The Importance Of Growing Trees

Trees play an important role in the life of modern man. We cannot dream of our existence without trees. They give us shade and protect our soil and water resources. They give us fruit and firewood. We are entirely dependent on trees for our shelter. Paper is made from pulp. Thus trees supply us with many of conveniences of life.

Trees supply oxygen which is essential to life. Green leaves absorb carbon dioxide and with the help of sunlight break it down with carbon and oxygen. Trees release oxygen into the air and they use carbon which is known as photosynthesis.

Trees keep the atmosphere cool. Clouds passing over them cause rain. Roots of trees bind the soil and check the soil being eroded by rainfall. If there were no trees, rainwater would drain off the surface. Rain water sinks underground and the water level increases. Trees prevent drought, flood and soil erosion.

Trees are very useful to man. There is the rubber tree growing in Kerala, Assam and Malaya from their saps we get ‘rubber’ which we use for numerous purposes. There is the coconut tree, every part of which is useful. Trees are of importance not only to man but also to birds and animals. Their branches give shelter to millions of birds and forests support the lives of wild animals of many kind.

We value tree both for their usefulness and beauty. They have a way of refreshing the eyes bringing peace to the mind.

Thus trees should be planted in large number. We should try to plant at least one tree each in our lifetime which will go a long way towards our economy. Our national govt. has recently adopted a scheme to create community forests to serve the basic needs of the rural folk. If it is implemented in right earnest, it will solve our present crisis. Trees are our country’s wealth. We must consider it our sacred duty to protect them and to look after them well.
